2016 Volkswagen Passat Named IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus

Volkswagen's updated midsize 2016 Passat sedan has been named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. For 2016, the Passat wears new front and rear styling, uses an updated version of Volkswagen's multimedia system and gets more safety features.

The sedan received the top score of good across all areas of testing, including the difficult small front overlap crash, as well as an advanced rating for front crash prevention. To be eligible, a vehicle has to have good ratings in all crash tests as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. The previous Passat was rated a Top Safety Pick  because it received an acceptable score in the small front overlap crash and did not have an available front crash prevention system. 

The new Passat's front crash prevention system, called Front Assist, is a forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking; it's standard on SE models and above. The 2016 Passat joins the 2016 Golf, Golf SportWagen, Golf GTI and Jetta on the Top Safety Pick Plus list.
